Life Insurance

Numerous individuals have found a sense of relief upon receiving a diagnosis as it provided an explanation for their feelings.

Our advisers carefully listen to your story to understand you, and then choose an insurer that suits you.

Information we should be aware of:

  • At what point did you receive a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder?
  • Which medication are you currently on?
  • Have you sought professional help?
  • Have you ever engaged in self-harm or attempted suicide?
  • If the BPD has affected your ability to work or caused any time off?

Individuals with borderline personality disorder may require a report from their GP to support their life insurance applications. The insurer will request information from your GP regarding your overall health, medication usage, treatment, and the impact of the condition on a daily basis. The insurer will organize these reports at their own cost once they receive your application.

The insurer will inquire about any history of self-harm or suicide attempts. These questions might come up in conversations with insurers, so it’s a good idea to be ready for them, even though they might not be easy to discuss.

It’s not the questions themselves, but rather the way they are asked, that can make these conversations challenging. Our team of advisers undergo dedicated training in order to understand how to make arranging your insurances as supportive as possible.

Individuals with mild symptoms of borderline personality disorder may be able to obtain life insurance at standard rates. In cases where strong symptoms of borderline personality disorder or recent suicide attempts are evident, standard insurers may opt to increase premiums, delay offering coverage for a specified period, or reject the application altogether. If that happens, we’ll set up your life insurance with insurers who specialize in that. No need to stress.

Critical Illness

For critical illness cover with borderline personality disorder, the application requires information on symptom severity, prescribed medications, ongoing treatments, existing secondary conditions, and history of suicide attempts. The insurer may request access to a report from your GP in order to determine the terms that can be provided for critical illness cover.

It is important to note that your critical illness cover may have an exclusion for claims associated with borderline personality disorder under the condition of Total Permanent Disability. Even though it may not be perfect, we encourage you to consider this policy type, usually covering a minimum of 50 claimable illnesses.

It is recommended that you submit your critical illness application to an insurance company that provides the best terms for individuals with borderline personality disorder. In cases where borderline personality disorder presents significant symptoms or history of suicide attempts, standard insurers may opt to reject the critical illness application.

Our responsibility is to research and identify insurers who can accommodate you, in order to avoid the situation of your coverage being declined, which can be difficult to hear. If necessary, we can contact specialist insurers for your critical illness cover.

Income Protection

Income protection for individuals with borderline personality disorder is typically subject to individual case evaluations. The insurer will focus on determining if having borderline personality disorder led to your work absences.

The insurer may request your consent to communicate with your GP for verification of your diagnosis, treatment, and overall well-being. Income protection usually comes with non-standard terms where it is offered. This indicates that claims associated with borderline personality disorder are probably not covered.

The insurer may opt not to provide cover in cases of severe symptoms. Certain specialist income protection policies may be an option to consider if claims related to borderline personality disorder are not excluded, but note that the acceptance criteria is stringent.

If you’re not approved for income protection, you might want to think about Accident, Sickness and Unemployment Cover. The accident, sickness, and unemployment cover is not medically underwritten, so your borderline personality disorder won’t affect the premium or acceptance terms. However, any claims related to your condition will be excluded under this policy.

An accident, sickness, and unemployment policy offer 12 to 24 months of income protection in case you can’t work due to long-term disability, injury, or involuntary redundancy.
